Buying a used EV checklist

1. Before you see it

• Run a PPSR check (ppsr.gov.au) for finance owing, write-offs and theft.
• Check for recalls at vehiclerecalls.gov.au and ask if they've been done.
• Look up the battery warranty: years from first registration and kilometres, and whether it transfers to you.
• Check the original battery size: some models came with more than one.
• Compare the price with the same model new: big discounts on new cars hit used prices hard.

2. Battery health the most important check

• Ask for a battery health (state of health) report from a dealer, or use an OBD app and adapter for that model.
• Charge to 100% and compare the shown range with the car's range when new.
• Ask how it was charged: mostly home AC charging is gentler than daily fast charging.
• Check for battery warnings or reduced-power messages on the dash.
• Ask whether the battery or modules have ever been replaced, with paperwork.

3. Inspect the car

• Test the charge port: plug in to AC and, if you can, a fast charger. Check the port flap and latch.
• Check the 12-volt battery age: a weak 12 V battery causes many EV faults.
• Tyres: EV tyres wear fast, and replacement can be costly.
• Look underneath for damage to the battery case from speed bumps or kerbs.
• Check the software is up to date and the app account can be transferred.
• Test the heating and air conditioning: heat pumps can be expensive to repair.
• Get a pre-purchase inspection from a mechanic who works on EVs.

4. What should come with it

• Portable charging cable for a power point, and any type 2 cable.
• Both keys or key cards, and the app transferred to you.
• Service history and any battery or recall paperwork.
• Home charger if it's being sold with the house or car.
