Electric van buying checklist

1. Will it do the job?

• Log your busiest day's kilometres and the heaviest load you carry.
• Real range with a full load, in winter and on the highway, not just the official figure.
• Payload after shelving and fit-out: racks, shelves and tools add weight.
• Towing capacity if you tow a trailer, and the range with it.
• Cargo length, height and door openings for your gear.
• Licence: check the gross vehicle mass is within what your drivers can drive.

2. Warranty and service

• Vehicle and battery warranty kilometre limits: high-kilometre vans can run out early.
• Nearest service centre that works on this van, and typical wait for parts.
• Loan or hire vehicle while yours is off the road
• Roadside assistance, including towing to a charger.
• Check for recalls and known issues on the model.

3. Charging and money

• Where each van will charge overnight: depot or the driver's home.
• Charger and electrical costs: see the EV Pick fleet charging checklist for depots.
• Diesel saving per year from the EV Pick van calculator.
• Tax: ask your accountant about depreciation, the instant asset write-off and FBT.
• Grants: check your state before ordering. Most won't pay for vans already bought.
• Resale or end-of-lease value, and lease options.
